OPEN CITY restored PERPERIKON, newspaper Attack, 29.11.2009

“Ataka” newspaper, November, 29th 2009, pg.24

A RESTORED TOWN NEAR PERPERIKON WAS OPENED
The restored archeological complex Achridos, located 2 km from Perperikon, was yesterday officially presented by the archaeologist Nikolai Ovcharov and architect Konstantin Peev. The complex was a regional center, which housed the administration that ruled the Eastern Rhodopes region during IX-XII century AD.
Works on the site started in year 2001, after the site unfortunately had been subjected to ruthless treasure hunters’ invasions. Among the unique findings are more than 100 lead seals from the Middle Ages, among them ten were belonging to high officials and four of them to bishops.
According to archaeologist Prof. Ovcharov, there was a connection between the regional center and Perperikon. During this period, Perperikon represented a battle fortress, but Achridos resided  the regional government. Among the restored objects is a unique Christian three-nave basilica that was once richly decorated in marble. There were two chapels - one north and another south. In one of the chapels was a tomb in which priests were buried. Eminent citizens were buried in the newly excavated Acropolis - jewelry and coins are found there.
According to Nikolai Ovcharov, this is the first such center opened in the Byzantine Empire. It existed until the XII century, and was afterwards abandoned. During the excavations a unique silver key from the treasury was found and a bronze cross – a relic which is kept in the church of St. Mary in Kardzhali. In the restoration of the facility EUR 250,000 have been invested, provided by the PHARE program.

PERPERIKON WITH MAYORALTY, newspaper Telegraph, 29.11.2009

The administrative district center of Perperikon is fully restored, it became clear yesterday.
It is located in the Bashi Klise about 2 km. from the rock city of the Thracians, and is dated 9-12c. Studies have started 2 years ago, and team of archaeologist Nikolai Ovcharov came across the surprising findings. According to Ovcharov the regional center of Perperikon reveals the best architecture from the flowering period of the Byzantine Empire. "Then Perperikon was only a military fortress, while the administrative functions are exported in already restored regional center. This continued until the end of 12 century, when the fortress restored functions of the main center of antiquity, said Ovcharov. The restoration of the regional center of Perperikon was financed with approximately 300.000 EUR. The funds are from the PHARE program, the total is 2.6 million, but some of them are assigned for building a visitor information center at the foot of the rock city.

SENSATIONAL FINDS OF IMPERIAL SEALS, newspaper Monitor, 29.11.2009

The administrative district center of Perperikon is now fully restored, said yesterday the archaeologist Nikolai Ovcharov.
It is located in Klise Basha, about two kilometers away from the imperial city of the Thracians. It is dated about IX-XII century. The studies have started two years ago. The team of the archaeologist Nikolai Ovcharov came across surprising findings. According to him, the regional center if Perperikon reveals the best Byzantine architecture of the flowering of the Byzantine Empire.
“Perperikon itself was only a military fortress while the administrative funkctions were exported in the regional center which is now restored.  This continued until the end of the XII century when the fortress restored its original functions of main center of the antiquity”, said Ovcharov. Within 200-250 years this place was the most important place not only in the Eastern Rhodopes and Thrace, but in general. He said.
Near the fortress Perperikon were developed whole estates which were bounded to its functioning through the different periods, reported the archaeologist. The historians, the archaeologists and the restorators who were involved in the research of the region have aimed to restore the glory of the stone Thracian city not only from the time of antiquity but also from medieval times. Among the unique artifacts during the excavations at the regional center were found a silver key and a cross relic with pieces from God’s Cross. The key is in a showcase in a museum and the cross is in the monastery complex “Uspenie Bogorodichno” in Kardjali.
However, from  a historical point of view, the most important artifact is  the collection of lead seals, said Ovcharov. Again the treasure-hunters were there first before the start of the excavations and took away hundreds of seals. However the archaeologists found about 120 stamps which are evidence for the presence of clerks from Constantinopol, guards of the royal treasury and bishops. Amongst the last found seals were those belonged to the bishops from Ahridos – Episcopal which only 20 years ago was unrevealed to the science. Its center was in the monastery of St. John the Precursor in the neighborhood
Veselchane in Kardjali, Ovcharov explained. The regional administration was located the monastery and Perperikon.
According to the archaeologist the administration in Kardjali should try to turn the antique complex into a piece for cultural tourism. However the lack of energy resources, water and easy access to the renovated center could stop the tourist flow.

REHABILITATION OF EPISCOPAL CENTER NEAR PERPERIKON, NEWSPAPER „NOV ZHIVOT”, 29.11.2009.2009

Archaeologist Nikolay Ovcharov and architect Konstantin Peev presented yesterday a restored medieval district's administrative center. It dates from the IX - XII century and is situated in the area of Klise Bash, near Chiflik village, in the Kardzhali area. According to archaeologists, the complex has housed the administration that ruled the Eastern Rhodopes region in the period from the IX to the XII century. The study began in 2001 when there was only a field with traces of the treasure hunters’ work.
Restoration and conservation have lasted for four months. Approximately EUR 300,000 of the EUR 2,5 million fund have been invested, allocated under PHARE program for restoration and conservation of the medieval town of Perperikon. Rehabilitation has been performed on the foundation and part of the wall of a medieval church with two chapels, as well as several rooms, including the Bishop’ treasury, said Nikolai Ovcharov. Most interesting is the room where the archive of the regional center is situated. Records found proves that the room was used as an archive - more than a hundred lead seals - a kind of business card to the Middle Ages, giving details of their holders.
During excavation works, a silver key from the treasury of the district center and a bronze cross-relic were found, which contains, archaeologists suggest, particles from the cross of Christ, held today in the monastery complex "Uspenie Bogorodichno" in the Kardzhali district "Gledka".
According to surveys, during IX - XII century Perperikon was a military fortress, and life was flourishing in the administrative center of the Eastern Rhodopes region - Achridos. This center had a connection with the monastery complex of “St. John the Precursor “in Kardjali and with Perperikon. By studying the lead seals it may be concluded that there were four bishops. Surrounding the church there were also excavated graves, in which nobles are likely to have been buried. According to Nikolai Ovcharov, this is the first such center opened in the Byzantine Empire. It existed until the XII century, and was abandoned afterwards.

Perperikon offices open their doors to tourists. Has already completed the restoration of a regional administrative center in the area bashyna Klise, who is close to the rock fortress. That said archaeologist Professor Nikolay Ovcharov. Studies of the architectural complex of IX-XII century lasted more than 8 years.
"When we started, does not imply that the mountain can reveal the best architecture of the flowering of the Byzantine Empire", said Ovcharov.
Only later did scientists realize that at this time Perperikon itself was only a military fortress, while administrative functions are being exported at this center.
At the end of XII century castle once again regained its function as the main center of antiquity. At first, archaeologists discovered the basilica with authentic marble altar and part of the room, where full documentation is kept on and stamp of a residence Achridos governor.
Around the church there were graves in the necropolis of senior dignitaries. Among the key findings are silver from the treasury and two katinarcheta having only one analogue, kept in the Louvre. Detected and Bronze Cross - relikvariy, which in the opinion of scientists have kept the particles from the cross of Christ.
After restoration facility is now suitable for visitors who have shaped paths to be made artistic and spectacular lighting and parking.
